Back to School FDL Has Some Catching Up To Do

June 2, 2019

As an unfortunate side effect of the flooding that occurred in March, the Boys & Girls Club storage area, where the Back to School FDL supplies are stored, took on some water. When that happened, approximately 435 backpacks, 550 notebooks, and other assorted supplies totaling around $5,000 were lost. That means we’re going to have some catching up to do if we’re going to be able to fill the school supply needs of children in our area this coming August.

Please consider helping out Back to School FDL through a monetary or supply donation. Your generosity will go a long way in helping us to provide school supplies for over 850 area children who need assistance with that added expense in late August.

Registration for Back to School FDL will again be a 2-day sign-up at the Salvation Army. You may register on either Saturday, August 3 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or Monday, August 5 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. There will be several trained volunteers assisting on those days who will be able to answer any questions about eligibility and Distribution Day. More information about what is needed for registration will be provided as registration dates approach or can be found at backtoschoolfdl.org.

This year’s Distribution Day where children shop for school supplies with a volunteer will be held on August 24 at the Boys & Girls Club. Help us help kids begin school with confidence; you can make a difference in a child’s life.

Back to School FDL Collecting Supplies

June 17, 2019

Soon you’ll be seeing Back to School FDL volunteers around town working to collect supplies for Back to School FDL Distribution Day. This will provide you with several opportunities to be a part of a project that supports others and helps children feel prepared for the start of the school year.

Please watch for the dates and times of the Fill the Bus campaign in either late July or August. Due to Shopko’s closing, we’re still exploring alternate locations for places to park the bus. Area churches and local businesses will also be conducting their own drives by having collection points for school supplies in their buildings.

If you or someone you know is eligible for this supply give-away, please remember that registration will be a 2-day sign-up at the Salvation Army. You may register on either Saturday, August 3 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or Monday, August 5 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. There will be several trained volunteers assisting on those days who will be able to answer questions about eligibility and Distribution Day.

Back to School FDL – By the Numbers

July 1, 2019

When you consider that 3,087 of the 7,082 students in the Fond du Lac School District are economically disadvantaged, the need for a project like Back to School FDL to support our families throughout the Fond du Lac area is evident. In 2018, Back to School served 887 children whose families would have struggled with preparing for school had there been no Distribution Day in August. Our generous community always meets the challenge.

Businesses and churches in the Fond du Lac area have been busy conducting supply drives for Back to School FDL and it’s great to see our storage area filling up with these supplies. Due to water damage, there was $5,000 worth of supplies that was lost after the March floods and we’re trying to recoup what was ruined. Again, the Fond du Lac community is reaching out to us to provide assistance.

If your organization is interested in hosting a supply drive, posters to publicize the drive are available for downloading (in English or Spanish versions) under the website’s Publicity menu at www.backtoschoolfld.org Tips for hosting a supply drive are also available for download. Photos of your drive can be shared with us for possible posting on Back to School FDL’s Facebook page. Click on the little envelope btsteam@backtoschoolfdl.org, on the main page, write a caption, and attach the photo.

Volunteers interested in helping out again or for the first time, can go to our website and click on Volunteer Opportunities under the Volunteer tab and view some of the volunteer opportunities or sign up to help. We need over 120 volunteers over the summer and on Distribution Day, August 24, to ensure that we meet the project’s objectives.

Monetary donations to support the distribution of thousands of free school supplies to students in need can be mailed to Back to School FDL, P. O. Box 1747, Fond du Lac WI 54936-1747. Another convenient way to donate is the online PayPal option under the Funding menu on the website. All donors will receive a thank you and a statement that their donation is tax deductible.

Back to School FDL Registration Fast Approaching

July 18, 2019

It’s amazing how quickly the lazy days of summer pass. Fortunately, there is still a little over a month to enjoy these warm days at the pools, taking bike rides or long walks, or having picnics at a local park.

For those of you who are eligible to participate in the Back to School FDL supplies give away, please remember that there are only two days to sign up for Distribution Day. Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 3 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or Monday, August 5 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m at the Salvation Army. There will be several trained volunteers assisting on those days who will be able to answer questions about eligibility and any other related questions.

Families need to provide a valid photo ID, proof of residence in the form of a current utility bill, rent receipt, as well as a government or W-2 document. A driver’s license/ID and proof of household income in the form of current pay stubs, bank statements or paperwork showing free or reduced lunch is also acceptable. Families who qualify will be assigned a specific time on August 24 for children to “shop” with a volunteer for free school supplies.
