When you consider that 3,087 of the 7,082 students in the Fond du Lac School District are economically disadvantaged, the need for a project like Back to School FDL to support our families throughout the Fond du Lac area is evident. In 2018, Back to School served 887 children whose families would have struggled with preparing for school had there been no Distribution Day in August. Our generous community always meets the challenge.
Businesses and churches in the Fond du Lac area have been busy conducting supply drives for Back to School FDL and it’s great to see our storage area filling up with these supplies. Due to water damage, there was $5,000 worth of supplies that was lost after the March floods and we’re trying to recoup what was ruined. Again, the Fond du Lac community is reaching out to us to provide assistance.
If your organization is interested in hosting a supply drive, posters to publicize the drive are available for downloading (in English or Spanish versions) under the website’s Publicity menu at www.backtoschoolfld.org Tips for hosting a supply drive are also available for download. Photos of your drive can be shared with us for possible posting on Back to School FDL’s Facebook page. Click on the little envelope [email protected], on the main page, write a caption, and attach the photo.
Volunteers interested in helping out again or for the first time, can go to our website and click on Volunteer Opportunities under the Volunteer tab and view some of the volunteer opportunities or sign up to help. We need over 120 volunteers over the summer and on Distribution Day, August 24, to ensure that we meet the project’s objectives.
Monetary donations to support the distribution of thousands of free school supplies to students in need can be mailed to Back to School FDL, P. O. Box 1747, Fond du Lac WI 54936-1747. Another convenient way to donate is the online PayPal option under the Funding menu on the website. All donors will receive a thank you and a statement that their donation is tax-deductible.
Back to School FDL is a program that works for students in our community and has been working for over 20 years. It is a collaboration of local agencies, businesses, churches, and community members dedicated to making sure that any local student needing assistance with obtaining school supplies receives it.
